The 4th of July is by far my favorite holiday.  The weather is generally stunning; spending it with family is a choice and not a command performance; it is celebrated outdoors, on lakes, at rodeo arenas, and in the mountains; and it celebrates the birth of American democracy and liberty, which doesn’t offend anyone I would spend any time with, as opposed to some other holidays that fall over the course of the year.

Here’s what we’ll be doing later tonight at Hillhouse – Brother Dear took this picture last year.

Here’s what we hopefully won’t be doing later at Hillhouse – my brother-in-law nearly became part of the fireworks display last year!

I’ll leave you to your own celebrations, with the words of Erma Bombeck:

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” – Erma Bombeck

Happy Fourth of July!
